After-commute compensation subtracts your commute cost from the package estimate. It is not take-home pay. Effective hourly compensation includes non-cash values and divides by working hours only; commuting time is excluded.

Keep cash, estimates and costs separate

  1. Cash compensation = base salary + annual bonus + commission. Use a cautious estimate for variable pay, then try another amount.
  2. Estimated total compensation = cash + employer retirement contribution + benefits estimate + annualized equity. Employer cost does not necessarily equal value to you.
  3. After-commute estimate = total compensation − annual commute cost. Gross pay and personal expenses are combined only as a comparison aid.
  4. Effective hourly compensation = after-commute estimate ÷ (weekly hours × working weeks). It is not an hourly wage or overtime entitlement.

For example, $80,000 cash + $9,000 non-cash estimates − $2,400 commute cost = $86,600. Over 40 hours × 48 weeks, that is $45.10 per working hour including non-cash estimates. No taxes, investment growth, vesting probabilities or salary market data are assumed.
